Call for Proposals
The Open University’s Music Department is delighted to host the 2020 British Forum for Ethnomusicology and Royal Musical Association Research Students’ Conference. We look forward to welcoming UK and international postgraduates to present their research and creative practice in an inclusive, friendly, and supportive atmosphere. The conference will also include training and careers workshops, informal performance opportunities, and a variety of social and networking events.
We are pleased to announce that keynote lectures will be given by Katherine Butler Schofield (King’s College, London) and Sean Curran (University of Cambridge).

Call for Papers
Postgraduate students are invited to submit proposals relating to any aspect of musical research, including but not limited to composition, audiovisual media, performance and/or other creative practices, musicology, ethnomusicology, music psychology, music pedagogy, and research that cuts across (sub-)disciplinary boundaries. We invite proposals for full-length presentations (20 minutes, with a further 10 minutes for discussion and questions), shorter ‘lightning’ presentations (5 minutes, which may optionally be presented in conjunction with a poster), and lecture recitals (35 minutes, with a further 10 minutes for discussion and questions). Full-length papers can also include a live performance element or use recorded electronic music; however, you will be expected to provide instrumentalists and repertoire.
Proposals for themed panels (3 or 4 full-length papers) are also welcome; see the submission guidelines below for further details.
Composition students are additionally or alternatively invited to submit a proposal for the Composition Workshop, detailed below.
Submission Guidelines
Proposals of no more than 250 words should be submitted to bfe-rma2020@open.ac.uk<mailto:bfe-rma2020@open.ac.uk by midnight on 11 October 2019. Please provide the following information when submitting your proposal: name, email address, institution, status (e.g. MA student, PhD student), presentation title, presentation format (full-length paper/lightning paper (with or without poster)). Please also include a brief biography of no more than 50 words.
Proposals for themed panels should include a 250-word panel proposal that includes the panel title and the name of the panel convenor as well as three or four individual proposals that follow the guidance above.
Decisions will be communicated to proposers by 1 November 2019.
Call for Compositions
As part of the conference, the OU’s Music Department is delighted to offer a composition workshop in collaboration with its partner Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The workshop will be facilitated by Dominic Murcott with compositions performed by Aleksander Szram (piano). Composers are invited to submit works for solo piano of not more than 6 minutes’ duration (shorter pieces are welcome, as are movements or excerpts of longer pieces). Selected compositions will be performed in the workshop, followed by time for discussion.
Submission Guidelines
Scores should be submitted in PDF format accompanied by a separate abstract of no more than 250 words that briefly describes the aims and methods of the piece. These materials should be submitted to bfe-rma2020@open.ac.uk<mailto:bfe-rma2020@open.ac.uk by midnight on 11 October 2019. Please provide the following information when submitting your proposal: name, email address, institution, status (e.g. MA student, PhD student), composition title. Please also include a brief biography of no more than 50 words.
